Painting plastic laminate cabinets

Q.      Our kitchen cabinets are Formica. They are a very ugly lime green and we would like to replace them. We were under the assumption that Formica cabinets could not be painted. However, someone told us recently that they can. Is this true? If so, what type of paint is used, where do we purchase it, and is there anything we need to know about applying it?

A.      Yes, any plastic laminate can be painted. First, make sure the cabinets are thoroughly cleaned, then slightly rough up the surfaces to be painted with sandpaper to break down the sheen. Prime the surfaces with a stain-blocker such as Zinsser’s B-I-N, Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or Cover Stain. Paint with a top quality high gloss alkyd paint of your choice. Allow the paint to dry long enough to become very hard to withstand future cleaning.
