Weathervane as lightning rod?

Q.    Regarding a cupola with a metal weathervane on a new house in an exposed lakeside area: Does the weathervane need to be grounded, or does a lightning rod need to be installed?

A.    Grounding the weathervane alone will not give you much protection as any lightning strike could still ignite the house. The surest protection is to have a complete lightning rod system installed.
