Metal weathervane needs grounding

Q.    We have a cupola with a metal weathervane on a new house in an exposed lakeside area. Does the weathervane need to be grounded, or does a lightning rod need to be installed?

A.    A metal weathervane, like a television or other antenna, should at least be grounded. If you are in an area with frequent lightning strikes, having a professional install a complete lightning rod system is a good precaution. I have such a system on my house.
