Looking for best value in replacement windows

Q.    We live in a modest home (built in the 1920s) in a desirable community (good re-sale on homes). Our windows are in need of replacement and the price range has surprised us. Do you have a recommendation? We were really impressed by the Renewal by Andersen, but they are twice the price of the highest-end vinyl replacement windows we’ve seen. Thank you for any insight which you may provide.

A.    The decision you make should depend on what the neighborhood is like. If your house has some significant aesthetic value and the other houses have upgraded with wood windows, it may be the best way for you to go. Andersen is top of the line.

However, if other houses in your neighborhood have changed their windows to vinyl or have covered their old siding with vinyl, your doing so may not adversely affect the resale value of your house. But be sure to get top-of-the-line vinyl windows; cheaper vinyl windows develop problems in cold weather.
