Removing ring from toilet bowl

Q.    You have been very helpful in the past so I hope you have a solution for my problem. Our commode has a very difficult ring to remove inside the bowl. I drained the bowl and tried to scrape it off; I applied a calcium, lime and rust remover; I tried Scrub Free and Lime Away, all to no avail. What do you suggest?

A.    I assume the ring is at the top of the water in the bowl where mineral deposits in the water settle and cling to the china. Buy a bottle of muriatic acid from a hardware store. Wear rubber gloves and very gently pour about two cups’ worth of the acid into the bowl before you retire for the night. Close the lid. In the morning, scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and flush the toilet. The ring should be gone.  Muriatic acid is very caustic so handle it with great care.
