Pests Carpenter ant

Carpenter ants can’t be ignored

Q.    I just discovered evidence that ants have been in the wood in the cellar ceiling area just above the cement walls where the floor joists show in the exposed ceiling area of the basement. Does that makes sense? There is some sawdust around indicating they were there. I found only one dead ant. Now do I need to call someone (and who would that be) to look at this? Or clean up the area, see if this happens again when warmer weather comes? I really could use some advice. Who to call, what to do, or whether this is a major concern.

A.    Yes it is of concern. They are probably carpenter ants having made a nest in damp wood. Call an independent pest control operator and ask to have someone come over to investigate. He or she will recommend a treatment and advise you on the repairs needed to keep moisture out of the area where they are found.
