Can bleach be used with septic tank?

Q.    I have some questions regarding my septic tank. My washing machine drains into the septic tank; can I use Clorox bleach in washing our clothes? How often should I pump out the septic tank?

A.    Although no chemicals are good in septic tanks, small amounts of bleach are not too harmful. Just be sure you do not do too many washes with Clorox bleach on the same day. Whatever you use is also quite diluted in the amount of water required by a wash load.

The recommendations are to have a septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years. However, it depends on how many people are living in the house, the size of the tank (1,000 gallons are the norm but many tanks are smaller), and if the house is lived in on a daily basis or is a vacation home with intermittent use.
