Depth of asphalt on a new driveway

Q.    I am in need of a new asphalt driveway as the current one is badly cracked and breaking up. I got two estimates, one contractor is going to dig three inches and the other four inches deep. A difference of one thousand dollars. Is the extra money worth the extra inch depth?

A.    Probably not. It depends on the soil substrate. If it drains well, three inches are fine. Check the estimates for what else they plan on doing. You want two inches of base asphalt and one inch of top asphalt.
