Vent pipe freezes
Q. Three of the past four years I have had to pay for someone to thaw the ice formed in my septic vent pipes. They say there is nothing I can do to fix this problem. A plumber cut the length of my pipe (above the roof line) to 12 inches. That hasn’t worked either. Any advice?
A. If the vent pipe is less than 4 inches in diameter, it is prone to icing, which will seal the pipe in a very cold climate. The section of pipe in the attic and through the roof can be changed to a 4-inch plastic pipe. The section of pipe going through the attic above the insulation can also be insulated by wrapping fiberglass loosely around it.
