Doors House with red front door

Avoid south-facing storm door

Q.   In the spring we are going to replace our front entrance door, which is currently a wooden one with a sidelight and sorely in need or replacing. This door faces the south, therefore gets direct sunlight most of the day.  My question is what type of material, either fiberglass or steel the best choice? We have a aluminum storm door which serves a dual purpose, one being weather related and the second is to keep our pets from running out unimpeded. I have been told by several people that fiberglass does have a tendency to become distorted if the door is facing direct sunlight along with a storm door in place.

A.   Both fiberglass and metal primary doors will get seriously damaged when the sun hits the storm door. To prevent distortion of the primary door, you will have to leave the screen insert in all year. These new doors are so energy-efficient that storm doors are not necessary.
