Covering dirt floor of crawl space

Q.  When covering a dirt floor of a crawl space, is it alright to staple the 6-mil poly to the pressure-treated sill plate? Seems it would be easier than taping. Thank you in advance for your help!

A.  The polyethylene sheeting does not need to be brought up the foundation walls to the pressure-treated mudsill onto which the framing is built. It is best to cover the soil thoroughly and make it tight around the interior perimeter of the foundation by weighing it down with a little soil taken from the ground.

My concern with bringing the poly up the walls and sealing it to the mudsill is that mold may form behind it and affect the health of the occupants. Containing the soil’s moisture with the poly film is OK, as the soil takes care of itself.
